I Need Glasses! How Perception Shapes Your Reality.
A few weeks ago, I took my daughter for an eye test. She had been complaining about seeing lights when she opened and closed her eyes. I didn’t expect anything unusual - after all, neither her father nor I have ever needed glasses. But to my surprise, she was diagnosed as long-sighted and given a strong prescription.
Since we were already there, I decided to get my own eyes checked. I had no concerns - my vision had always felt fine and I took that for granted. But, as it turns out, I was wrong. While my eyesight isn’t awful, I do need glasses for long-sightedness.
For how long I have been viewing the world through a slightly blurry lens I don’t know! It has become normal and I never questioned it.
The Lens Through Which We See the World
I realised that there is a powerful parallel here about how we perceive the world. We often assume that what we see, think, and believe is the truth - rarely questioning our version of the world. We trust our judgments and don’t consider that our perspective might be flawed or worse, inaccurate. But in reality, our perceptions are shaped by unconscious biases, past experiences, and external influences and are rarely completely true.
We can only see the world through the lens we have, and over time, that lens can become clouded - whether by stress, routine, or limiting beliefs. It may seem clear because it’s what we get used to, or its all we’ve ever known, but sometimes, an experience or the words of another can momentarily clean the lens, offering a fresh, sharp perspective. Yet, if we’re not mindful, the dirt settles back in, and we continue to navigate life through a distorted view.
The Impact of a Clouded Lens
Modern life does little to help us maintain a clear lens. Stress, overstimulation, poor lifestyle habits, and the pressure to meet endless demands can all contribute to a foggy outlook. When our perception is clouded, our focus narrows, and our minds follow impacting on our ability to see possibilities and opportunities. We become stuck - unable to see solutions, new ideas, or the bigger picture.
Before my eye test, I didn’t think I needed glasses because I had adjusted to a slightly blurry world. It wasn’t until the optician placed different lenses in front of me that I realised how sharp and vibrant everything could be. Now, as I wait for my glasses, I can’t help but notice just how unclear my vision actually is.
Life works the same way. Sometimes, we need to pause, step back, and consciously remove the layers of stress and distraction clouding our perception. Only then can we gain clarity on our purpose, our potential, and our path forward.
Helping Women Find Clarity
So many of the women I work with feel stuck. They are overwhelmed, exhausted, and trapped in roles that deplete them, yet they have no idea how to change direction. They can’t see the wood for the trees. Their lens is too clouded to recognise their own power and potential.
This is where I come in. I help women clear the ‘fog’ from their lenses so they can start seeing the world - and themselves - more clearly. When they shift their perspective, they uncover new possibilities, regain confidence, and step into a life of greater fulfilment and purpose.
