Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs: How Your Mind Can Be Your Own Prison

We often hear about the power of the mind, but how often do we truly reflect on the ways our beliefs shape our reality? Many of the limits we experience in life are not imposed by external factors but by the beliefs we hold about ourselves and the world around us.

In this post, I will explore how our beliefs can act as invisible barriers, holding us back from reaching our true potential, and how we can start breaking free from these mental constraints.

How Our Beliefs Are Formed

From childhood, we’re shaped by our environment—our family, our culture, and our society. As we grow, we pick up beliefs about who we are and what we’re capable of, many of which are passed down unconsciously. These beliefs often become deeply ingrained, to the point where we accept them as facts without questioning their validity.

For example, if you were told as a child that you’re not “good at maths” or “not athletic,” these labels can stick with you, influencing your actions and shaping the limits you place on yourself. Society also contributes to this—there are countless expectations based on factors like gender, social class, or background that can subtly (or not so subtly) shape what we believe we’re capable of.

Even as adults we are shaped by our environment - think about all of the information you are exposed to through social media, TV and radio, not to mention friends and family. Information that influences the way you see yourself in comparison to others. This is the key driver behind marketing - to persuade you that you need something by influencing your beliefs.

Beliefs are powerful and quite often they can benefit us in navigating the world and helping us to grow. But sometimes they can become the mental bars that keep us confined in a sort of prison, preventing us from pursuing opportunities or taking on challenges because we’ve come to accept that “we can’t” or “we’re not meant to.”

The Power of Challenging Beliefs

The good news is that beliefs are not set in stone. They may feel like truths, but they are often just perceptions—ones that can be challenged and changed.

This concept is a key foundation of coaching and many talking therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). The process begins with identifying the beliefs that are holding you back. Then, by challenging these beliefs and searching for evidence to the contrary, you can start to shift your mindset and open up new possibilities.

For instance, if you believe you’re not creative because you struggled with art at school, ask yourself: Is this truly the case? Have you tested this belief as an adult? What evidence do you have that proves you are creative? Maybe you express creativity in other ways—through problem-solving, writing, or design.

Disproving the Hypothesis

The process of breaking down limiting beliefs is like being a detective or a scientist. You’re looking for clues and evidence to prove the belief wrong. Start by questioning the belief: Is this really true? Then, actively search for evidence that disproves it.

Let’s take the belief, “I’m not fit enough to run a 5K.” Instead of accepting that as a truth, try to find small pieces of evidence that show it’s not entirely accurate. Have you walked or jogged short distances before? Do you have the ability to build up your fitness over time? Could you follow a training plan that helps you improve? Often, you’ll find that the beliefs holding you back are based more on fear or past experiences than on your actual ability.

Why Can’t You?

One question I’ve found helpful when dealing with limiting beliefs is: Why can’t you? It’s a simple yet powerful challenge to the restrictions we place on ourselves. When you feel that you can’t do something, pause and ask yourself, Why can’t I? This opens up your thinking and invites you to explore whether the limitations you feel are real or self-imposed.

By asking Why can’t you?, you’re forcing yourself to confront the beliefs that have been quietly holding you back and to look for alternatives that might be closer to the truth.

It is important to approach this question with an open and curious mind, if you come from a place of negativity you will fall into the trap of looking for excuses rather an opportunities.

Rewiring Your Beliefs

Once you start to challenge your limiting beliefs, you can begin the process of rewiring your brain. Every time you push past a belief and take action that proves it wrong, you’re creating new mental connections. Over time, these new beliefs become stronger, and the old limiting ones fade.

For example, if you believe you’re not a runner but start by running a few times a week, you’re slowly building evidence that you can run. Each run becomes another piece of proof that chips away at the old belief until, eventually, you start to see yourself as a runner.

There is an approach to challenging limiting beliefs called Behavioural Activation. Essentially it’s like the ‘fake it until you make it’ idea. Take actions that align with your goals and eventually your belief in your ability to meet your goals will shift and you will adapt your mindset from one of ‘I can’t’ to one that says ‘I can and this is who I am’. You create a new reality!

Breaking Free from the Prison of Your Mind

Limiting beliefs are powerful because they operate below the surface, dictating how we live without us even realising it. But the good news is that you have the ability to challenge and change them. By questioning your beliefs, looking for evidence that disproves them, and taking small steps towards your goals, you can start to free yourself from the mental prison you’ve been living in.

So, what beliefs are holding you back? What have you accepted as true about yourself that may not be grounded in reality?
